What is RPA?
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) uses software "bots" to emulate human interaction with user interfaces. If a human clicks a button, copies text, and pastes it into another window, an RPA bot can do the exact same thing.
Key Advantage: Non-invasive. It sits "on top" of existing applications without needing access to databases or APIs. This makes it perfect for connecting legacy systems that have no modern integration points.
Traditional Automation
Traditional automation typically involves writing code to connect systems via APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) or direct database integration. This is often more robust but requires significant development effort.
Key Advantage: Speed and Stability. API calls are instantaneous and less prone to breaking if a button on a screen moves a few pixels.
Critical Differences
- Speed of Implementation: RPA is generally faster to deploy (weeks vs months).
- Technical Debt: RPA can accumulate higher maintenance debt if UIs change frequently. Traditional automation is more stable long-term.
